  • Jet Ski Buying Guide: New vs Used, and What to Check Before You Buy

Whether you’re looking at a brand new WaveRunner or a five-year-old private sale, the questions that actually matter are largely the same. Here’s what to work through before you hand over any money.

New vs used: the real trade-off

New PWCs come with a full warranty and the latest engine and hull technology, but depreciate quickly in the first couple of years — much like a car. Used models, particularly ones a few years old with moderate hours, often represent significantly better value, provided you can verify condition and history. If you’re riding occasionally rather than constantly, a well-maintained used machine is usually the more sensible starting point.

What to ask when buying used

    • How many engine hours are on it, and does that match the machine’s age?
    • Has it ever been used or stored in saltwater without proper flushing?
    • Is there a documented service history, and when was it last serviced?
    • Has the hull ever been repaired, and can you see evidence of the repair?
    • Why is the current owner selling?
    • Has it been winterised correctly each year it’s been owned?

A machine with genuinely low hours, full service records and no saltwater neglect is worth paying more for than one that’s cheaper but a question mark on all of the above.

Matching the model to how you’ll actually use it

Recreation models are built for casual cruising and are typically the easiest and most forgiving to ride. Performance models trade some stability for speed and aggressive handling. Touring models are larger, more stable, and built to comfortably carry two or three people — a better fit for family use or longer days on the water than a performance-focused machine.

    Brand reputation still matters

Sea-Doo, Yamaha WaveRunner and Kawasaki Jet Ski remain the most established names for a reason — reliability, parts availability and resale value are all stronger with these three than with less common brands, which matters as much for used buyers as new ones.
