Scuba diving looks like a big commitment from the outside — certification, gear, cost — but broken down, it’s a fairly short path from “never tried it” to “qualified to dive with a buddy anywhere in the world.” Here’s what’s actually involved in the UK.
Getting certified
Most UK divers start with a PADI Open Water Diver course, or the equivalent from BSAC, SSI or CMAS. It typically runs over 3-4 days (or several weekend sessions) and combines classroom or eLearning theory, confined water training in a pool, and four open water dives, usually in a quarry, lake, or the sea depending on your dive centre. Once certified, an Open Water Diver can dive to 18 metres with a buddy, without needing a professional present.
What it actually costs
An Open Water course in the UK typically runs from around £300 to £600 depending on the dive centre and whether it includes equipment hire. After certification, ongoing costs are mostly per-dive: air fills, boat trips or shore dive fees, and equipment servicing if you own your own gear rather than renting.
Essential equipment
- Mask, fins and snorkel — the first purchase most divers make, since a well-fitted mask matters more than any other single item
- Wetsuit or drysuit — UK and Irish waters generally call for at least a 5mm wetsuit, or a drysuit for cold-water and winter diving
- BCD (buoyancy compensator device) — controls your buoyancy and holds your tank
- Regulator — delivers air from the tank; usually rented at first, bought once you’re diving regularly
- Dive computer — tracks depth, time and no-decompression limits, and is considered essential kit by most instructors today
- Torch and SMB (surface marker buoy) — for low-visibility UK diving and signalling your position
Do you need to be a strong swimmer?
Courses require a basic swim test — typically 200m unassisted plus 10 minutes of treading water or floating — rather than advanced swimming ability. Most people who can swim comfortably pass this without specific training.
